Due to bad weather, a ship collided with a fender in the outer harbour of Zeebrugge.
The fender was damaged severely, luckely the quay wasn’t touched. The rubber blocks, used as shock absorbers, were torn loose, but the safety chains held. The fender was dangling from its chains below the surface when our diving team arrived.

Together with the technicians of Artes Depret, a salvage plan was discussed. A crane was set up and Marie went into the water. She was soon able to attach the crane’s lifting chains to the fender so it remained stable.

After everyting was secured, she cutted each chain with the underwater torch. After each chain, the stability was reassessed. When the last chain was cut, the fender could be salvaged.
